Chapter 26

Iblis

“Wind!”

Raven’s outburst roused Iblis from the edge of sleep. She stood in the doorway of his office, dressed as though she was going to work in a law firm or accounting office. Even half-awake, he couldn’t miss the strategic display of cleavage courtesy of undone buttons, but he had the impression it wasn’t for his benefit.

“What are you going on about?” Iblis asked, sitting upright in the decadently padded leather chair.

“We know Knox calls on weather magic,” Raven said, circling behind the desk and squeezing past Iblis. He tried not to be distracted.

“Of course. I assumed he would be an earth druid or a sky druid, as having a sea druid in the middle of Illinois would be pointless.” Iblis watched as his familiar bent over his desk and tapped at his computer. “Given how he dealt with the tempest elemental unleashed by Mikha’el, and how Mad Dog and Mikey met their end, it is obvious Knox is attuned to the sky.”

“If Liam keeps calling on weather magic, it will disrupt the natural wind patterns,” Raven explained as she inserted a thumb drive and continued to click the mouse. “I went to pay a visit to a local meteorologist.”

“I wondered where you had been all day,” Iblis remarked. He didn’t detect any evidence Raven had done more than pop a couple of buttons and bat her eyes to entice this weatherman. Good, he didn’t like to share his toys unless it suited his purpose.

“After listening to him drone on about what a nag his wife is, and how anytime now he will get a call from a major market, I convinced him to do a little investigation.” Raven batted her eyes for effect. “Mark retrieved a month’s worth of wind charts from this program and compiled it for me.”

Iblis watched as a map covered with animated green arrows populated the screen. “What are we watching?”

“This shows wind flow over time, over a month. Watch what happens as I let it advance.” Raven clicked the mouse, and the arrows squiggled about.

“I’m not in the mood to play guessing games,” Iblis warned.

Raven tapped the monitor. “Keep your eyes on this area. I’ll run it again.”

The arrows swirled around the area indicated, while the rest of the map shifted from day to day. Regardless of what happened on the rest of the map, a spiral remained on this section of the map. “Play it one more time,” Iblis instructed. The same result; the rest of the map ebbed, flowed, and shifted, but there was always a spiral of arrows. “Where is this vortex?”

“It’s between Metamora, Washington, and Eureka,” Raven replied with a smug grin. “Roughly 13 to 15 miles east of Peoria.”

“How precise can we get with this map?” Iblis stared as the loop played again.

“Down to a one-mile radius, and Liam would be near the center. I could narrow it to less than a dozen farms, maybe half a dozen.”

“Well done!” Iblis’ praise was genuine.

“How are you
